On September 15th we celebrated Bailey's 11th birthday! She of course was serenaded with "Happy Birthday" songs and just looked at us like we were freaks (which we kind of are). She received a new pink collar so that everyone would know that she is a girl! And Papa Schafeitel got her a bone from the butcher that looked like an entire cow leg....yummy. Nicolas and Drew gave her some "pig ears" too. She was one happy dog! This was a special one because quite honestly, we didn't think she would still be with us. When she was first diagnosed with lymphoma at the beginning of March we were told 4-6 weeks, or 4-6 months if we spent $4000.00 bucks on chemo. Of course our hearts were breaking at the thought that she even could be sick, let alone have cancer. Then faced with the decision that meant lose her or pay a lot of money to have her suffer through chemo, with only a chance of remission. Thank goodness we have a good vet that recommended we get a second opinion from an actual Veterinarian Oncologist. Now, just one oral dose of chemo a day, with no side effects to speak of, and our girl is still here with us! I love this dog so much and feel like she has opened my heart to all animals and the role they play in our lives. To be loved unconditionally, no matter what, has been the ultimate blessing I could receive from this four legged baby of mine! Happy Birthday big girl! We look forward to celebrating the next one with you!
Oh and just one thing....if you are wanting to add a new pet to your lives, please chose a shelter pet! My little soapbox: Don't breed or buy, while shelter animals die! Sorry I can't help myself.
